Wildfire Mitigation
& Defensible Space Design

Zone 1: Next to the home (0-5 feet)
- Keep this area clear of leaves, wood, and anything than can burn
- Use rocks, gravel, and concrete instead of plants or wood mulch
- Trim off any branches in this area so they don’t hang over the roof
Zone 2: A bit farther out (5-30 feet)
- Spread out trees and shrubs so they have at least 30 feet of space between groupings
- Keep grass short and remove any dead or dying plants right away
- Remove lower tree drances from the bottom third of each tree
Zone 3: Outer edge (30-100+ feet)
- Clean up piles of fallen leaves and branches often, but mowing grass is not necessary
- Keep 6-10 feet of space between tree crowns and remove very low branches
- Consider creating openings or meadows between clumps of trees
