Zone 1: Next to the home (0-5 feet)

• Keep this area clear of leaves, wood, and anything than can burn
• Use rocks, gravel, and concrete instead of plants or wood mulch
• Trim off any branches in this area so they don’t hang over the roof 

Zone 2: A bit farther out (5-30 feet)

• Spread out trees and shrubs so they have at least 30 feet of space between groupings
• Keep grass short and remove any dead or dying plants right away
• Remove lower tree drances from the bottom third of each tree

Zone 3: Outer edge (30-100+ feet)

• Clean up piles of fallen leaves and branches often, but mowing grass is not necessary
• Keep 6-10 feet of space between tree crowns and remove very low branches
• Consider creating openings or meadows between clumps of trees
